Perforated basket centrifuge principle, construction, working and uses.

Learn perforated basket centrifuge principle, working, construction, uses, advantages and disadvantages. It separates solid from liquids.

What is perforated basket centrifuge?

It also known as perforated bowl centrifuge. This centrifuge generally used for separation of solids and liquid phases by the help of perforated wall.

So, a perforated basket centrifuge is a machine that uses high-speed rotation to separate solid particles from a liquid. It has a perforated cylindrical basket that lets liquid pass through while capturing solids inside.

Perforated basket centrifuge principle

This centrifuge follows filtration mechanism for centrifugation. The separation of solids and liquid phases is based on their densities.

During centrifugation, the perforated wall of basket passes the liquid and retain the solid phase.

Construction

It consists of basket which should be made of steel, copper or other suitable material. The material used in perforated basket should have the great resistance of corrosion.

Diameter of basket should be 0.90 meters and capacity should be 0.85 meters cube. If we use large number of particles for separation, then basket should be bigger.

It also contains filter cloth for bigger sized particles. Perforated basket should be on vertical shaft driven by a motor using suitable power system.

Basket needs 5 kw power for starting and for running it need 2 kw power. Steel hooks are used to increase strengthen of basket.

Surrounding the basket, a case is provided, which collects pure, filtrated and discharged liquid.

Working

  • The substance is kept in the basket.
  • Power is applied to spin the basket.
  • Rotate the basket in maximum speed of 1000 revaluations per minute.
  • During centrifugation, liquid phase passes through perforated wall, collected as filtrate.
  • While solid phase retains in the middle of basket.
  • Now rotate the basket until the complete dry of solid.
  • After some time, turned off the power and leave the basket for rest.
  • Finally, we can get a solid cake in bottom of basket.
  • Collect the cake by cutting with sharp blade.

Uses

  • To separate crystalline drugs from mother liquor.
  • To separate unwanted solid from liquid.
  • Separating solids from liquids.
  • Clarifying liquids in wastewater treatment.
  • Extracting oils from seeds or fruits.
  • Drying wet solids.
  • Purifying chemicals in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Removing particles from beverages like wine and beer.
  • Cleaning fine particles from industrial processes.
  • Recycling and recovering valuable materials.

Advantages of perforated basket centrifuge

  • High capacity for large-scale applications.
  • Efficient separation due to high centrifugal force.
  • Versatile for various separation needs.
  • Low maintenance and easy operation.
  • Customizable to meet specific requirements.

Disadvantages

  • Can break easily and wear out quickly.
  • Not good at separating very small or similar-sized particles.
  • Use a lot of energy, which can be costly.
  • Difficult to clean, increasing the risk of contamination.
  • Not very flexible for different separation needs.
