Semi continuous centrifuge principle construction working and uses

Learn semi continuous centrifuge principle, construction, working, uses, advantages and disadvantages. It used to separate solid from slurry or suspension.

What is semi continuous centrifuge?

It is also known as short cycle automatic batch centrifuge. This is a type of centrifuge that operates periodically.

Here solids and liquids are continuously fed into the centrifuge while the separated solids are periodically discharged.

Semi continuous centrifuge widely used in a variety of industries for the separation of solid-liquid mixtures.

Semi continuous centrifuge principle

It is a filtration centrifuge, which separates solid and liquid by following density differences.

During centrifugation, the liquid phase passes through the perforated wall (located inside of bowl) but the solid phase retains in the bowl. Solid undergoes washing then removed by using a blade.

Construction

  • It consists of a vertical shaped basket.
  • A motor, which will drive the basket.
  • A feed pipe and wash pipe introduced to the side of the basket.
  • A feeler is adjusted to feed which help to control thickness of slurry by controlling proper air supply.
  • A hydraulic cylinder attached to basket for filtrate discharge.

Working

  • Put the slurry into the basket through a pipe.
  • Now, Keep the slurry thickness between 50-70 mm.
  • When it’s the right thickness, stop adding slurry and air.
  • Start the motor to spin the basket.
  • Liquid passes through the holes in the basket and get discharged in at outlet.
  • But the solid stays in the basket and form a solid cake.
  • Rinse the solid cake with water.
  • A hydraulic cylinder contain a knife, which lifted up and releases the liquid without cutting the cake.
  • The cake and crystals can work like a filter.
  • Repeat the process, and the liquid that comes out has 3-5% moisture.

Uses

  • Chemical Industry: Treating crystals, liquids, and suspensions.
  • Food and Beverage Industry: Processing juices, pulps, and beverages.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Handling ingredients and mixtures.
  • Biotechnology Industry: Managing biomolecules and biomass.
  • Mining Industry: Dealing with materials and minerals.
  • Wastewater Treatment: Processing sludge and materials.

Advantages of semi continuous centrifuge

  • It is a short cycle batch centrifuge, which separate solid phase very faster.
  • During centrifugation, solid easily drained very faster from the basket.
  • High capacity for solid materials.
  • Reduced labor requirements.
  • Lower energy consumption.
  • Versatile for various industries.

Disadvantages

  • The formed crystals may break centrifuge.
  • It is a complicated centrifuge equipment.
  • Initial cost can be high.
  • Maintenance and repair expenses.
  • Complex operation and control.
  • Limited to certain types of applications.
  • Possibility of clogging or blockages.
